Most pillows are bad for face-down sleepers. Stomach sleepers should choose a thin pillow that will not lift their head up throughout the night, which can lead to a sore neck in the morning. After sleeping on 11 pillows for 14 nights, we’ve identified the ones that will keep a stomach sleeper comfortable, ranging from a cooling latex option to a flat memory foam slab under three inches.

Stomach sleeping is the least common and the hardest position to shop for. On a fat pillow, lie face down with your head tipped back, your neck turned to one side, and your lower back bearing the weight. Once you know the fix, it’s easy: Go low, go soft, and keep your spine as flat as possible. Each of the following picks does that in its own way.

The short answer

The best pillow for stomach sleepers is the Helix Low-Loft Talalay Latex Pillow. It is low, cool, and maintains the head and neck in a neutral position throughout the night. The Buffy Cloud in Soft performs the same function for around $40 on a budget. The Bluewave 2.75″ slab brings your head nearly as close to the mattress for the most balanced look. For all stomach sleepers, the formula is thin, soft, and low.

How we tested

Each of our testers slept for 14 nights on each pillow featured in this guide, in their own bedroom, not a lab for an afternoon. Our sleep and wellness contributor Nathan Brooks is the one who tested all these pillows and rated them on neck alignment and spinal alignment for face-down sleeping, which is what will determine if a stomach sleeper wakes up fine or stiff. Our senior product tester, Sarah Carter, also spent a night sleeping on each one and noting how they felt after each night – if they were flatter after a week, if they were fading, if the fill was shifting, etc.

We didn’t rate a pillow on the first night. We rated it after night 12, when the novelty has worn off. Our founder Zaidan Morgan, a side sleeper, slept on them a few times as well to test how the low lofts performed for side and combination sleepers. We also evaluated the actual loft (in inches), fill, heat, ease of cleaning, price, trial, and warranty of each pillow. Our fact-checker, Olivia Hayes, has double-checked all specifications and costs, and David Reed has edited each review to ensure that nothing is stated beyond what was found in the testing.

The Helix Low-Loft Talalay Latex Pillow is our top overall pillow for stomach sleepers because it keeps the head low and the neck close to a neutral spinal alignment while keeping you cool, which is something most stomach sleepers can’t find in a single pillow.

The low loft of 5.75 inches sounds like a lot, but latex doesn’t act like the number on the box. Springy, not squishy, the head settles in rather than sinks through. The surface provides just enough give to lower the head while maintaining neck alignment, and it won’t flatten out as soft fills do by morning. A single molded Talalay latex core covered with a breathable TENCEL fabric makes it cool, naturally dust mite- and allergen-resistant, and requires no fluffing.

Our Experience

Nathan tested this pillow, and it took a few nights to get used to the first couple of nights, as it doesn’t sink like solid memory foam. It stays bouncy. After the first week, however, the stiffness in his neck that he typically woke up with in the morning had disappeared. After his face and chest pushed the 5.75-inch core down slightly, it was at what he termed the ideal height for stomach sleepers. His verdict by night 14: stomach sleepers, who normally search for the flattest pillow they can find, will surprise them here, as it remains low and still provides the head with proper support, so your face never smothers into it.

Sarah also slept on it, from a back sleeper position, and was comfortable from the first night. The Talalay latex provided her cervical spine with the little extra lift a back sleeper desires immediately. She was a hot sleeper, and the TENCEL cover and airflow were her biggest compliments: she never had to turn to the cool side in 14 nights, and it was cool all night. She relaxed her shoulders and upper back as the low loft kept her head from lifting too high.

Best For

Stomach sleepers looking for one pillow that will keep the neck low and cool while sleeping, hot sleepers, and those with allergies. The low loft is also suitable for back sleepers.

Not Ideal For

Very petite stomach sleepers who require an almost flat pillow, and those who prefer a soft sink-in feel over bounce.

Pros
  • Runs truly cool – verified over 14 nights with a hot sleeper
  • Not sensitive to allergens and dust mites
  • Does not fluff or migrate fill
Cons
  • The 5.75-inch loft is tall, which might not be ideal for petite sleepers.
  • Springy latex feel takes 2-3 nights to adjust to.

The Buffy Cloud Pillow in Soft is our top value for stomach sleepers, since it is the one thing that matters most: it stays low and compresses under the head, and it costs about $40. The Soft version is the least firm of the three firmness levels, and your head will drop while your neck remains flat. The fill is made from recycled PET fibers spun from recycled plastic bottles and covered with a silky TENCEL lyocell, which absorbs moisture and has a cool feel. It’s machine washable, something most down pillows at this price can’t say, and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, meaning that the materials are tested for harmful substances.

Our Experience

Nathan noted that the Soft Cloud is a bit puffy when it comes out of the bag, but as soon as he lay face down, it flattened out almost completely, and the soft marshmallow give kept his head from rising up, so he didn’t have to crane his neck. The face of a stomach sleeper is directly on the pillow, so the cover was important to him as well: over 14 nights, the TENCEL lyocell remained silky on the skin and did not leave him feeling warm or sweaty. His value verdict was simple. If you are a stomach sleeper and don’t want to invest in a high-quality pillow, this is the pillow to purchase, as it will not become floppy like a cheap feather pillow; it will maintain a light, fluffy support under the head.

Best For

Budget shoppers, hot sleepers, and those who want a low-profile, soft, washable pillow that flattens out when they sleep on their face.

Not Ideal For

Sleepers who prefer a firm, structured feel under the head and those who want adjustable loft.

Pros
  • Extremely inexpensive for a cooling, washable pillow.
  • Soft fill compresses to a stomach-friendly low profile
  • Moisture-wicking lyocell cover that remains cool on the face.
Cons
  • Down-alternative fibers need an occasional shake-out to stay even
  • Not adjustable, so you cannot fine-tune the height
  • Short 7-night trial before the returns policy takes over

The Brooklinen Down Pillow in Soft is our top down pillow for stomach sleepers, as the soft, air-filled down clusters flatten out under the head and allow the neck to remain near the mattress. Get the Soft version; Brooklinen recommends it for belly sleeping, and so do we. It is Responsible Down Standard certified, which means that the down is ethically sourced, and the fill is down and feathers inside a smooth cotton sateen shell.

Our Experience

The first note Nathan made was the shell. The 100% cotton sateen cover felt silky and luxurious out of the box, as opposed to the cheaper pillows that have sharp feather quills that poke you; the Soft version relies on pure down clusters. His initial response on his stomach was that it felt like air. When he rests his head, it collapses down and becomes nearly flat, keeping his neck and spine in a neutral position on the mattress without strain. Over the next week, he found how moldable it is, folding and tucking it under his face and hands easily; with no foam, there was no pressure on his face, and breathing stayed easy. His 2-week verdict was all luxury: the best pillow for stomach sleepers who prefer a soft, hotel-like pillow over a bouncy foam pillow.

Best For

Stomach sleepers who prefer a soft, conforming down feel and are not allergic to down.

Not Ideal For

Very hot sleepers, allergy sufferers, and those who want a machine-washable pillow.

Pros
  • Soft down clusters compress to a stomach
  • Silky cotton sateen shell with no poking quills
  • Soft enough to fit under your face and hands
Cons
  • Needs occasional fluffing to keep an even loft
  • Down can trap warmth and is not ideal for allergy sufferers
  • Only spot clean or dry clean.

The Brooklyn Bedding Talalay Latex Pillow in low loft is our top latex choice for stomach sleepers, as it is one of the lowest latex pillows available, at a listed 4-inch loft, which helps keep the head down and the neck in a neutral position. The Talalay latex core is springy and does not sink, and the perforated airflow channels ensure it remains breathable; the soft cover contributes to the cool, hypoallergenic feel, as latex is naturally resistant to dust mites and allergens.

Our Experience

Nathan’s first impression was the weight. This one felt substantial when he picked it up, as it is a solid single latex block, not shredded foam, and the organic cotton blend cover felt premium and soft from night one, next to down. The first couple of nights felt unusual, since there is no memory foam sinking here; resting his head felt more like floating. The 4” low loft was perfect for stomach sleeping, compressing just enough to keep his neck straight. He never had to fluff or shake it in 14 nights, and it stayed the same shape by morning regardless of how long he lay face down. His most useful feature was temperature: the ventilated airflow channels kept him cool throughout the entire test, and his face remained cool all night, which he deemed a victory for stomach sleepers who tend to get hot.

Best For

Those who sleep on their stomachs and prefer the lowest, coolest latex and enjoy a soft, springy feel, particularly hot sleepers.

Not Ideal For

Those who prefer a firm and dense pillow, those who prefer a slow memory foam sink, and anyone who needs a standard size.

Pros
  • True 4-inch loft, which is lower than most latex pillows.
  • Holds its shape with no fluffing
  • Ventilation channels keep it cool
Cons
  • Medium soft feel, may be too soft for firmness fans.
  • No standard size – only Queen and King
  • 30-day return, not a long trial

This is as cool a flat latex pillow as it gets for the price. You can also compare it in our best pillows for neck pain guide.

The Cozy Earth Silk Pillow is the best luxury pillow for stomach sleepers because its quiet, deflating 100% mulberry silk filling supports the head, keeps the neck from rising, and keeps the airway open. It’s covered in a naturally breathable, moisture-wicking viscose from bamboo shell, making it a great option for hot sleepers and those who suffer from night sweats. The silk fill is naturally hypoallergenic too.

Our Experience

Nathan’s main concern with most puffy pillows is that they push against his nose and mouth and make it more difficult for him to breathe when he is lying face down. This one lay quietly under his head from the first night, with no push-back from the memory foam, and his neck was held close to the mattress. His most sensitive find was made mid-test: a stomach sleeper’s face rubs against the pillow all night, leaving him with no pillow lines on his face in the morning, and skin that remains relaxed, and the surface remains cool to the touch, thanks to the silk fill and bamboo cloth. After two weeks, his sentence was on maintenance. Down pillows tend to clump or move to one side during the night, but the silk layers remained in place.

Best For

People who sleep on their stomach, prefer a high-quality, breathable pillow, are concerned about skin and face contact, and sleep hot or sweat during the night.

Not Ideal For

Budget shoppers, very petite sleepers who may find it a bit full, and anyone who wants a machine-washable pillow.

Pros
  • Deflates quietly to keep the neck low
  • Both friction-free face feel
  • Stays overnight, long trial and warranty
Cons
  • Expensive at around $198
  • Spot/dry clean only
  • For petite sleepers, medium loft is full.

The Purple Harmony Pillow in low loft is our top cooling recommendation for stomach sleepers, as it features a Talalay latex base, Purple’s honeycomb GelFlex Grid, and a moisture-wicking mesh cover; no other pillow we tested was cooler. The low height is 5.5 inches, which is at the high end of the stomach-sleeper range, but the grid and latex both bend under the head, leaving the neck near neutral. Purple states that this is a low height for back and tummy sleepers with smaller to medium frames.

Our Experience

As a stomach sleeper, Nathan found the 5.5-inch low loft to be borderline, and the first three nights were a bit high since the latex core still has some push-back even after it’s compressed. After day five, when he had adapted to the way the grid distributes weight, the pressure relief was obvious: no pressure on his face, and over 2000 open air channels meant breathing was easy throughout the night. It was by far the coolest pillow he tried.

Zaidan also slept on it from a side-sleeping position. He typically sleeps on tall pillows, but on a small or medium frame, this low-loft pillow fills the neck and shoulder gap nicely for side sleepers, as the gel grid prevents the head from falling through. He is an extremely hot sleeper and typically wakes up in a sweat, but the nylon-spandex cover and gel tech were so cool that he never had to turn to the other side of the pillow.

Best For

Hot stomach sleepers and combination sleepers (those who switch between stomach and side), particularly smaller to medium frames.

Not Ideal For

Petite stomach sleepers who require an almost flat pillow, and budget shoppers.

Pros
  • The coldest pillow we’ve ever tested
  • Over 2,000 air channels
  • Springy support that won’t flatten out
Cons
  • Taller than the flattest picks at 5.5 inches
  • Pricey at around $194
  • Limited to a 1-year warranty only

The Luxome LAYR Customizable Pillow is our top adjustable choice for stomach sleepers, as you can set the loft you want rather than relying on a fixed pillow to fit your neck. It comes with three stacking inserts, a soft down alternative, a medium gel-infused memory foam, and a solid firm foam block in a cool bamboo viscose cover. Pull inserts out to go low; add inserts back to go tall. The foam is CertiPUR-US certified, and the cover is OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 tested and clean.

Our Experience

On unzipping the bamboo viscose cover, Nathan found no loose fill inside, only three separate inserts stacked together. It was very tall and heavy out of the box, over 6 inches, which at first seems like a nightmare for a stomach sleeper. On the default setting, his neck was too high and caused him to be stiff on night one. Night two, he pulled the firm and medium inserts out and left only the single soft down-alternative insert in the cover. That reduced it to pancake flat (less than 3 inches), and his face on the bamboo cover felt like resting on a cool cloud, the mesh lining allowing him to breathe freely and sweat-free.

His verdict after two weeks: the ultimate solution for stomach sleepers who can’t stop purchasing pillows at the incorrect elevation; when it feels too level, toss in a handful of foam back from the medium insert. It remains completely under your control.

Best For

Stomach sleepers who prefer full control of height and combination sleepers who need a different loft on different nights.

Not Ideal For

Sleepers who are looking for a pillow that requires no assembly and anyone who desires a clear, long warranty.

Pros
  • Makes strips under 3″ wide flat for tummy sleepers
  • Three Materials in one, you control the feel.
  • Ventilate cool bamboo with mesh
Cons

The Tempur-Cloud Pillow is one of the best memory foam pillows for stomach sleepers that offers a slow, sink-in viscoelastic feel, something unusual in solid foam at the low 5” profile. The softness of the density is important here; with a firm foam pillow, the head is elevated, whereas with this pillow, it is allowed to drop closer to neutral for the neck and spine. Does not need fluffing and will retain its shape for years.

Our Experience

Nathan noticed the build first. It was heavy and solid, not shredded memory foam, and had a good stretchy knit cover which was very soft, all qualities that indicated quality to me, rather than the cheap pillows I had seen on my blog.

On his 1st night, he was 5” high, and it felt a bit tall for stomach sleeping. The real work started once his head weight and body heat hit the foam: it slowly compressed and softened, bringing his face and neck parallel with the mattress. The win was pressure relief the next week.

Typically, he experiences stiffness around his jawline and chin, and that’s what this pillow takes away—with the TEMPUR material contouring his face and facial features without offering any push-back. The only drawback of the Honest Catch is heat, as solid foam is warm, so go for the cooling cover or choose any of the cooling options you have above.

Best For

Stomach sleepers who value a slow-sinking memory foam feel and want it low enough to support the neck, and anyone who experiences jaw or chin pressure face down.

Not Ideal For

Hot sleepers (without the cooling cover) and those who want a sleep trial before buying.

Pros
  • Low 5-inch profile, rare for solid foam
  • Body heat melts it flat under the face
  • Cradles the jaw and chin, no pressure
Cons
  • Can trap heat; cooling cover costs extra
  • No sleep trial on pillows
  • One size only

The Company Store Cool Zzz Deluxe Pillow is our choice for hot stomach sleepers as it offers two methods of cooling: a cotton sateen shell that wicks moisture away from the skin and a liner that draws body heat away from the surface, keeping it cool. The fill is soft, hypoallergenic down alternative fibers that compress to a low profile, keeping the head down and the neck flat, and the whole pillow is machine washable.

Our Experience

Nathan tried it for alignment. It was fluffy on the shelf, but when he lay face down, it compressed to a low profile, with no strain on his neck and no stoppage to his breathing. His read: This is the best choice for stomach sleepers who desire the softness of down but not the rough, pressed surface that cheap pillows develop after a night’s sleep.

Zaidan, who heats up fast at night, watched the cooling. He was certain that it didn’t feel as cold as gel memory foam, but the moisture-wicking material controlled sweat from accumulating, and his face remained dry and comfortable for 14 nights. One other advantage, he noted, is that it can be put in the washing machine and dryer. He washed it during the test, and it returned to its original shape and softness, which most cooling pillows can’t handle.

Best For

Stomach sleepers who sweat at night, have hot nights, or live in warm climates, and prefer a soft, washable pillow.

Not Ideal For

Sleepers who want an icy, cool-to-the-touch surface, and anyone who wants adjustable loft.

Pros
  • Moisture-wicking fabric helps to keep the face dry
  • Soft fill is non-lumpy when compressed
  • Machine washable and dryer-safe
Cons
  • Cool sweat-wicking, not icy to the touch
  • If it is a full loft, it needs to be compressed to near 6 inches
  • Needs an occasional fluff to stay even

The Nest Bedding Easy Breather Natural Pillow is our recommendation for side and stomach sleepers, as it features a side zipper that allows you to add or remove shredded latex fill, making one pillow tall for side sleeping and flat for stomach sleeping. Shredded latex is breathable, naturally hypoallergenic, and the organic cotton cover is soft and washable.

Our Experience

Both testers were impressed with its overstuffed nature, almost 7 to 8 inches tall, and its smooth, rich organic knit cotton cover, which was free of chemical off-gassing and had a fresh, natural feel.

Our side sleeper Zaidan loved it from night one. He is a side sleeper and requires a high-loft fill to fill the space between shoulder and neck, which he didn’t change from the default. Unlike solid memory foam, it doesn’t block the head; the shredded latex and cotton-alternative blend is plush and squishy, and his neck remained elevated and straight all night, he said.

As a stomach sleeper, Nathan had the opposite first night. The height forced his neck up and strained it. The following morning, he opened it up and removed about 60-70% of the fill from the bag it comes in. After he did, it lowered sufficiently to keep his head level, and face-down nights were comfortable. The downside is that it requires some dirty work to get there.

Best For

People who sleep on their side and their stomach and would like to have one pillow that they can adjust.

Not Ideal For

Those who are strict stomach sleepers and don’t want to take off the fill, and those who want a low pillow that’s ready to go.

Pros
  • One pillow for side and stomach
  • Smooth organic cotton cover, no off-gassing.
  • Breathable shredded latex, washable cover
Cons
  • Ships tall, stomach sleepers remove a lot of fill
  • Changing the fill is a mess
  • Leans toward side and back out of the box

This adjustable pillow can be used for changing positions, you don’t need to have two pillows. If you sleep on your side, check out our best pillows for side sleepers guide.

We recommend the Bluewave Ultra Slim Gel Memory Foam Pillow for stomach and back sleepers, as it is a true thin pillow, flat enough to keep the head in a neutral position with the mattress and the spine in a neutral position. It is a solid gel-infused memory foam with a smooth bamboo and polyester blend cover and rounded edges to prevent the head from sliding off.

Our Experience

Both testers were impressed with the thinness of the box, a flat pancake with no hard edges and a smooth bamboo blend cover.

The stomach sleeper, Nathan, made it his personal favourite of the entire test. When he was at 2.75 inches, there was no pressure on his neck face down, and his spine remained parallel to the mattress. He also appreciated that this solid foam pillow doesn’t fluff up at the sides when you press down on the center and block your nose, as down pillows do.

Sarah tried it on her back. Back sleepers typically prefer a little more elevation, but on a slightly soft mattress, this 2.75-inch slab kept her head in a good position without propping her neck forward, filling the space under her neck. Her honest limit: if you have a heavier or broad-shouldered back sleeper, you might find it too flat.

The foam is infused with carbon, gel beads, and ventilation holes when it cools. It’s not icy like the Purple Harmony, but for memory foam, it didn’t hold body heat; it was pretty close to room temperature all night, Nathan said.

Sarah’s disclaimer: This is for flat sleepers only. If you roll onto your side in the night, it will not fill the shoulder gap, and you may wake with shoulder stiffness.

Best For

Stomach sleepers and stomach and back sleepers who prefer the flattest pillow.

Not Ideal For

Side sleepers, broad-shouldered back sleepers, and those who prefer a soft, plush feel.

Pros
  • True Zero Neck Pressure at 2.75 inches.
  • Solid foam remains in place and never blocks the nose
  • Washable cover, certified foam, low price
Cons
  • Firm and flat feel that plump fans don’t prefer
  • Too flat for side or broad-shouldered sleepers
  • Not adjustable, though other heights exist

How to Choose the Best Pillow for Stomach Sleepers

A few things to consider when finding the best pillow for stomach sleepers. This is what really counts. New to pillow shopping? Our best pillows guide includes loft and fill for all sleeping positions.

Loft

For stomach sleepers, loft is the pillow’s height. While lying on a high pillow, face down, your head is tilted back, causing your neck to bend and your lower back to be strained. Most experts recommend stomach sleepers use a low loft, about 3 inches or less, while lying on it.

The spec sheet doesn’t tell you this: Listed loft and real loft are two different things. A solid foam pillow will remain 5 inches. A latex pillow at 5.5 inches will compress slightly, while a down pillow at 6 inches will compress down to nearly nothing. Therefore, don’t just look at the number. If the height listed seems tall, a springy latex or soft down pillow may be a better choice, as it will compress under your head. Looking for the most in-depth look at heights? See our pillow loft guide.

Firmness and Sinkage

Stomach sleepers should use a soft to medium-soft pillow. Something too firm pushes your head up and undoes the low loft. Some sinkage is desirable here to allow your head to drop and maintain a flat spine. The key is to find the balance between softness to sink and body not to fade and leave you on the mattress.

Fill type

Every fill is different, choose the feel you want:

  • Memory foam: Slow, sinking hug. Solid foam can get hot, but it offers great contouring. For better airflow, try gel-infused memory foam or shredded memory foam.
  • Latex: Springy, responsive, naturally cool, and hypoallergenic. Holds its shape without fluffing.
  • Down: It is soft, plush, and easy to compress, but it does retain some heat and is not suitable for those with allergies.
  • Down alternative: The budget-friendly, hypoallergenic version of down, often made from recycled PET fibers.
  • Silk: smooth, breathable, hypoallergenic, and denser than down.

We have a complete pillow fills guide that covers all of the options.

Cover, cooling, and face contact

If you sleep on your stomach, your face is in the pillow all night, making the cover more important than for any other sleeping position. Look for a breathable, moisture-wicking cover like TENCEL, bamboo viscose, or cotton sateen. For those who are hot sleepers or suffer from night sweats, a cooling cover or mesh panels can help prevent heat build-up.

Allergies and Sensitive Skin

Allergies and sensitive skin are considerations, as your face is in contact with the pillow. Latex, silk, and down alternative fills are naturally hypoallergenic. Check for OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 or CertiPUR-US certifications, which indicate that the materials have been tested for harmful substances and low off-gassing and odor.

Size, Trial, and Warranty

Choose the pillow size that corresponds to your pillowcase size (standard, queen, or king); the pillow sizes guide shows the dimensions. A sleep trial is worthwhile, as the only true test is sleeping on it for a few weeks. Also, the National Sleep Foundation recommends changing pillows every 1-2 years, so a longer warranty is an indicator that the pillow is made to last. New to all this? Our how to choose a pillow guide walks through it step by step.

Set Up Your Bed for Stomach Sleeping

Half the work is done with the right pillow. The way you arrange the rest of your bed determines if you wake up pain-free.

Place a pillow under the pelvis. This is the one tip that no stomach sleeper ever hears. Sleeping face down will cause your hips and pelvis to sink into the mattress, arching your lower back and causing pain. A thin, flat pillow under your pelvis and abdomen will help to keep your spine level and relieve pressure. It’s the largest single comfort improvement for belly sleepers.

Your head should be as straight as possible. Sleeping on one side all night puts a strain on your neck. It’s easier to keep it closer to straight (or slightly turned) with a low pillow. Some even sleep face down with a thin pillow under the forehead so that the nose is clear.

Use only one pillow. Pillows are the quickest way to a sore neck. You only need one low-profile pillow under your head.

Sleep on a supportive mattress. A soft, saggy mattress allows your midsection to sink and disrupts your spine’s alignment. A firm or hard mattress with a solid support core will keep your hips up and your spine in a neutral position, working in harmony with your pillow.

There is one positive thing to mention: sleeping on your stomach may help to reduce snoring and alleviate mild obstructive sleep apnea, as it keeps the airway open. One reason people don’t give up on it despite the neck compromises. These steps make it as spine-friendly as possible.

Final Thoughts

Sleeping on your stomach is not easy on the body, but the correct pillow can help alleviate most of that. One thing was obvious about the best pillow for stomach sleepers after 14 nights on each: Loft is more important than brand or price. A pillow that maintains your head at a low level and your spine flat is better than an expensive pillow that is too high.

Match the pick with the sleep position. If you run hot, the Purple Harmony or the Brooklyn Bedding latex kept us coolest. The Luxome LAYR is a way to create your right height if you don’t know it. The Bluewave 2.75-inch slab is the flattest surface available. If you’re looking for a single pillow that gets it right out of the box, we’d recommend Helix Low-Loft Talalay.

Whatever you decide, go low, go soft, and place a thin pillow under your pelvis. Wait two weeks to judge it, as your neck will take that long to settle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What loft is best for stomach sleepers?

You should try to get a low loft, 3 inches or less, with your head on it. Keep in mind that soft and springy fills will compress, so a latex or down pillow that is listed at a higher height may still be effective when you lay on it. The aim is to maintain a low head position with a near-neutral neck.

Is a soft or firm pillow better for stomach sleepers?

Soft to medium softness. A soft pillow allows your head to sink down so that your spine remains flat. A firm pillow raises your head and stretches your neck, the exact opposite of what a stomach sleeper requires.

Can stomach sleepers use memory foam pillows?

Yes, if it’s low and soft. A thin solid-foam pillow such as the Tempur-Cloud or a flat gel foam slab such as the Bluewave 2.75-inch provides you with that sinking contour without elevating your head. Avoid tall, firm contour pillows.

Where should I put a second pillow when sleeping on my stomach?

Below your pelvis and lower abdomen. A thin, flat pillow there prevents your hips from settling into the mattress and helps to prevent your lower back from arching and aching. It’s the #1 tip for pain-free belly sleeping.

Is stomach sleeping bad for you?

This is the least common sleeping position and the most difficult on the neck and back, and most experts do not recommend it. But it does help with snoring and mild sleep apnea. If it’s the only way you can sleep, the solution is a thin pillow, a pillow under the pelvis, and a supportive mattress to support the spine.
